What the work looks like

From an offer letter to a first semester

A study project in Canada is a chain of documents that has to arrive in the right order. An admission comes first; in Quebec a CAQ follows; the federal study permit comes after that; and around them sit proof of funds, biometrics, medical exams where required, and a housing search that cannot wait until you land.

Each link has its own processing time, and they do not run in parallel. A file assembled a month late does not arrive a month late — it can miss an intake entirely. Most of what we do is protect that sequence: knowing what has to be started now in order to be ready later, and catching an incomplete document while there is still time to fix it.

Work backwards from your intended intake and count the processing times rather than the calendar months — admission, the Quebec certificate and the federal permit run in sequence, and each has its own queue. Students who begin a full cycle ahead of their target intake almost never run out of time; students who begin once an offer letter arrives sometimes do.

The Certificat d’acceptation du Québec is Quebec’s own acceptance certificate for studies in the province, issued before the federal study permit. If you are studying in Quebec beyond a short programme it is part of the sequence; if you are studying elsewhere in Canada it is not. Whether your particular programme triggers it is one of the things we check early.

Work rights attached to a study permit are set by federal rules and have changed several times in recent years, including the hours allowed off campus. Rather than quote a figure that may be out of date by the time you read it, we confirm the conditions written on your own permit — that document, not general guidance, governs what you may do.

A refusal is not automatically the end of a project, and the reasons matter more than the outcome — they are recorded in the officer’s notes, which can be requested.
